1. Is your headache preceded by some type of a warning signal, such as flashing lights, zigzag lines and loss of vision?
Classic migraines are characterized by sensory or visual warnings that occur about 30 minutes before the onset of the headache. Warning signals include:
Intense headache - throbbing, or pounding in the forehead, temple, ear, jaw, or around the eye.
- One-sided headache - that may move to the other side over time.
- Nausea

- Aura - a set of specific symptoms affecting the brain and vision that will
precede the onset of an attack, including:
- Flashing lights
- Seeing zigzag lines
- Temporary vision loss
- Speech difficulty
- Arm tingling
- Arm weakness
- Leg weakness
- Tingling face
- Tingling hands
- Confusion
2. Does your sensory/visual disturbance or aura phase last from 20 minutes to 1 hour?
The duration of the aura, from its onset to its subsidence, usually lasts around 20 minutes to one hour. Some people find the aura phase a frightening experience, especially if they suffer from loss of vision and memory loss. Click here to view some typical auras.
3. Does your headache start within an hour after the disturbance/aura has subsided?
In many cases, the headache occurs on the opposite side of the head from where the aura presents itself. Some people, do not experience headache pain even after their aura has subsided
4. Does your aura resemble the visual disturbances shown in the aura animations on this site? Watch the video
If your answer to all of these questions is YES, you should consider using the Auracol device as an alternative to medication or other invasive procedures.
According to research conducted by Harvard Doctor Stuart A Lipton, exerting consistent pressure on the superficial temporal arteries throughout the aura phase prevents classic migraine headache pain from occurring. The success of this technique is dependant on the proper application, which means that:
- The Auracol pressure pads should be in place on the temporal arteries as soon as the aura symptoms appear.
- The technique of exerting pressure on the temporal arteries has to be performed during the entire aura phase.
- The massage technique has to be concentrated on the frontal branches of the Superficial Temporal Arteries.
- The pressure on the temporal arteries has to be sufficient and consistent.
Both the Auracol device and Dr. Lipton’s digital massage technique produce the best result if you suffer from Classic Migraines - that is migraines preceded by a visual aura.
If you are unsure which type of migraine you are suffering from, please consult your physician.
There are many different types of auras, some of which are shown on this site. The Auracol site invites migraine sufferers to send in their images and drawings of auras, so we can expand our knowledge base.Contact Us
